Sunday, August 30th, 2009The Overrated Art of Waiting
Friday, August 28th, 2009Someone, somewhere, with much too much time on his hands, did a study I read just today and determined the average American spends 2-3 years of their blink of an eye existence waiting in line. I’m fairly certainly I’ve already achieved about half of that average just in trips to the BMV! Bottom line though, so much of our lives is spent waiting on something else: Waiting for checkout @ the grocery…waiting for the lady @ the self checkout to come check your stuff a 2nd time after you’ve already gone through the self checkout so you wouldn’t have to have someone check your bags in the first place…waiting for an open gas pump…waiting for an empty bathroom stall…waiting for your dog to poop in the yard (or neighbor’s yard if you’re lucky)…the stoplight to turn green when there isn’t anyone within 3 time zones of where you’re idling your life away…waiting for the moron mechanic at the dealership to tell you how much it will be to fix your car…waiting for the part to come in because you can fix it cheaper yourself…waiting so the engine will cool enough on said car that it doesn’t singe the fingerprints off your hands when you touch it…waiting until tomorrow to go into the local repair shop to have the guy who actually knows how to work on cars determine what is actually wrong with your car since the original diagnosis that cost $45 and half a day of your life to go to the stupid dealership apparently wasn’t accurate…oh yeah, and did I mention waiting for your unborn child to make his or her first appearance into this crazy world so you can try to determine which features are from you and which are from your wife and waiting to see your beautiful wife smile and enjoy life again!Â
That’s the story of our life as it currently stands. Our “new” car is having some issues that no one can seem to pinpoint and Melissa is 5 days over due for having this baby. In her mind, it might as well be 5 years. We’re excited in ways that are hard to express about sharing our world with someone God allowed us to create together, and we’d just really like to get started on that path today. Everyone keeps asking for a status update and I’m certain they mean well when they ask if we’ve had the baby, and we’re grateful for so many caring friends, but my gut level reaction is to tell them something like “Yes, didn’t you know? We’ve had the baby and already taught him to walk, talk, drive, and cure cancer. The only drawback is that in order to find the cure he had to experiment on his family to ensure no one else was injured in his efforts (he’s a real humanitarian like that) and thus managed to make his mother swell up like she has a watermelon in her stomach, which accounts for why she still looks pregnant but is actually the proud and very unpregant mother of a walking talking cancer-curing 27 year old.”
So no, the Wisley baby has not yet made an appearance. We’re hoping and praying for that soon, and if you’re so inclined, you could pray for a safe and happy delivery for all involved as well. I’ll try to keep everyone updated and maybe even post some pics once we have some available. Until then, we play the waiting game. I know good things come to those who wait, and all that other positive thinking mumbo-jumbo people throw around, and I know we’ll say it was all worth it (as if we had a choice) in the end, but we planned and prepared for August 24th and even though only 3-4% of moms deliver on their due date, we’re just kinda in that weird “we’re not sure what to do” stage with the whole issue now that we’re past. If you feel compelled to write and give us some uplifting Scripture verse or pithy saying or cutesy poem, that’s fine, feel free to write until you’ve got carpal tunnel. But, at this point, I’d rather hear some clever (that eliminates you, Captain) and sarcastic retort that would be a follow-up to the tone and spirit in which I hope this blog was received. I’ll be adding to the average as I wait for something good…Peace (I’m dropping the microphone and stepping off the soapbox)
